Colorado ranks ninth in the country for tornado activity, averaging forty-seven tornadoes each year. Although most tornadoes happen in the spring and summer months, October and November see a spike in tornado activity each year. SERVPRO® of Denver North responds to storm damage emergencies throughout the year and offer these tips on staying safe during a tornado from the American Red Cross:
- Identify a safe place in your home where household members and pets will gather during a tornado: a basement, storm cellar, or an interior room on the lowest floor with no windows
- In a high-rise building, pick a hallway in the center of the building. You may not have enough time to go to the lowest floor.
- In a mobile home, choose a safe place in a nearby sturdy building. If your mobile home park has a designated shelter, make it your safe place. No mobile home, however it is configured, is safe in a tornado.
- A tornado watchmeans a tornado is possible
- A tornado warningmeans a tornado is already occurring or will occur soon. Go to your safe place immediately.

The Importance of Making and Practicing an Evacuation Plan
11/12/2020 (Permalink)
The best time to plan your evacuation route is now
Creating An Evacuation Plan Is Important For Your Business
A fire drill does not just prepare your employees for potential blazes. It ensures that everyone knows what to do in an evacuation situation. There are many reasons you and your employees may need to leave the premises, including:
- Tornadoes
- Floods
- Hurricanes
- Earthquakes
Ideally, you would shelter-in-place during one of these disasters. However, if the structural integrity of the building is compromised, you may have to abandon the property. You should thus come up with an evacuation plan and practice it annually.
Making the Plan
Before you conduct the drill, you obviously need to create your evacuation strategy. Start by figuring out how you will alert employees about the emergency. You can use a portable radio or public address system.
Keep in mind that the power may go out during the storm. To ensure that your alarm works at all time, you should thus have an alternate electricity source. You may also want to use tactile alerts in case you have any deaf or blind employees. You can test these alarms during the fire drill.
Similarly, you should make sure that all of the workers understand and can implement the plan. You can even designate one person as an evacuation warden. He or she will be tasked with making sure the escape goes smoothly.
Work with the warden to map out all the possible evacuation routes. The routes should be well lit and clearly marked. You should also assign one person the task of calling the insurance provider and the storm cleanup company once everyone is out of the building.
Testing the Plan
After you develop the plan, hold a fire drill to assess your evacuation strategy. You can even invite the Denver, CO, fire department to participate. Talk to managers and employees after the drill to find out what went well and what needs to improve.
Creating an evacuation strategy is an important part of the storm preparation process. Be sure to run emergency drills in advance so you can work out any kinks before the nasty weather arrives.
3 Parts of a Sump Pump and How to Maintain Them
10/20/2020 (Permalink)
Maintain your sump pump
When Is It Time For Pump Maintenance?
Is your home in Denver, CO, at risk for basement flooding? If so, you probably have a sump pump installed. These devices may seem complicated, but there are only a few crucial parts to the machine. These need to properly maintained, or else the pump may break and flood your home. If you're unsure if it is time for pump maintenance, contact a professional to schedule an inspection or ask questions.
1. The Float
The float on your sump pump functions in almost the exact way that the float on your toilet does. When water drains into the basin, the float will rise with the water level. Once the water level is high enough, the pump will turn on and begin to dispose of the water. It's crucial that the float is clear of any debris. Otherwise, the pump may not turn on when needed due to weight changes incorrectly perceived by the float.
2. Drain Hose
The drain hose carries water that the pump has removed from your home away from the foundation. It's important that the outflow of this pipe be unobstructed. If there is any dirt or other debris blocking the pipe, it may clog and back up into your basement. This pipe should also extend to at least twenty feet from your home's foundation. In certain circumstances, such as if your home is in a sunken area of land, the pipe must extend further. This is necessary so that the disposed water does not flow back toward the foundation and cause water damage.
3. Sump Pit
The sump pit functions as a water collector. As the lowest point in your home's basement, all water will flow into it. The bottom of the pit should be filled with gravel. The gravel acts as a filter; it prevents debris from entering the pump directly. The gravel should always be visible, and any debris will need to be cleaned out, or the pump may eventually become clogged and not function properly—or burn up.
With a bit of basic knowledge, it is a simple task to maintain your sump pump. It's important that maintenance is carried out, otherwise, your pump can fail you when it is needed most.
The Cost Difference Between Mitigation and Restoration During a Flood
10/7/2020 (Permalink)
Flooding can cause major damage to your business.
Floods continue to be the most prevalent and expensive natural disaster in America. While preventative measures provide quicker and less expensive alternatives to the cost of hiring a flood cleanup company, many property owners do not mitigate against flood damage. This results in high costs and a lengthy restoration process.
Flood Prevention
One of the best preventative recommendations for flood damage is flood insurance, which property owners may purchase through the National Flood Insurance Program, managed by the Federal Insurance and Mitigation Administration (FIMA), for an average of $700 per year.
Some other preventative methods include the following:
• Sealing basement walls with compounds that are waterproof
• Installing reflux valves to prevent drains from backing up
• Moving heat and electrical sources to higher levels
• Backing up data to the cloud
• Making a flood plan, including work-from-home opportunities
Once in place, these measures offer protection, year after year. Even better, property owners can usually have the cost partially or fully covered by FIMA.
Flood Cleanup
In contrast, property owners who did not take preventative measures must hire a flood cleanup company out of pocket. Every day the business is closed is a day of income lost, while the company may have salaried staff to pay.
Drying out the business may take the restoration company a few days, and this can only begin after the flood waters recede. Restoration to pre-flood conditions may only require an additional few days, but in worst case scenarios, it may take a business a while to completely rebuild. Not surprisingly, FEMA estimates that 40 percent of small businesses, many of which do not invest in preventative measures, fail to recover from natural disasters.
When it comes to flood damage, prevention is always better than a cure. Sure, a reputable flood cleanup company may restore your place of business in a matter of days, but investing in proactive measures is the best approach to natural disasters in Denver, CO.
Keeping Your Business Safe During Thunderstorms
10/1/2020 (Permalink)
Being prepared is the best way to avoid major damage
As a business owner in Denver, CO, it's important to keep your workspace and employees safe during inclement weather. Storms can develop quickly and bring damaging rain, wind, hail, and lightning. A severe rain storm may lead to flash floods, which can create dangerous travel conditions. High winds during thunderstorms may also down trees and create power outages. Debris and hail may be blown into structures and cause damage. Here are some ways to prepare your workplace for severe weather.
1. Storm Preparation Before severe weather hits, take steps to secure your buildings. It's a good idea to discuss thunderstorm and lightning safety with your team, make a list of items to bring inside should a storm hit, and make an emergency preparedness kit. To prepare the exterior of your building, keep trees and shrubs trimmed, secure any loose flashing, and consult with a local fire department regarding lightning rods.
2. Storm Response During an intense rain storm, keep calm and put your preparation plans into action. Keep yourself and your employees safe by taking shelter in a secure area of the building. Choose a place that is away from windows, skylights, and glass doors, as these are more likely to be broken by strong wind or hail. Use battery-powered TVs and radios to listen to emergency updates from local or national weather services.
3. Storm Recovery Once the storm has passed, continue to make safety a top priority. Listen to radio or TV stations for updated information or safety instructions. Some areas or roads may be inaccessible due to downed power lines or flooded roadways. Keep yourself and your employees out of storm-damaged areas. If you need assistance with flood cleanup or storm cleanup, contact professionals in emergency restoration services immediately.
Thunderstorms and inclement weather may be hard to predict. Use these tips to keep your business and your staff safe in the event of a severe storm. Taking some basic safety precautions can lessen the damaging effects of a major rain storm.
Residential Storm Damage? Take Action Now!
9/15/2020 (Permalink)
Storm restoration specialist can dry your property quickly
Has a recent storm in Denver, CO, caused flood damage to your home? Major storms often arrive with surprisingly little warning, and the aftermath can be devastating for homeowners. Whether you are currently dealing with residential mold or flooding damage, or you’re being proactive by gathering information on how to handle this kind of emergency “just in case,” never assume you need to sit and wait for your flood insurance adjuster.
Why You Shouldn’t Wait
Here are three important reasons why you should not wait on your insurance adjuster after a storm floods your home:
1. You may be waiting a while. It might seem to make sense to wait on your adjuster; after all, he or she is the expert. However, after a large storm hits an area, most adjusters will understandably become extremely busy. Your claim will be one of many, and chances are high that you will have to wait before an adjuster can assess your damage.
2. Damage gets worse with time. When it comes to water damage, the longer you wait, the more harm can be done. The water has more time to seep into your walls, floors and foundation; mold has more time to grow and spread.
3. You don’t have to wait. You can take action right now, regardless of how long it winds up taking your flood insurance adjuster to get to you.
Next Steps
There are so many ways in which water and mold damage can wreak havoc on your home. Sometimes, the damage may not even be visible. If left untreated, this can lead to highly unpleasant and expensive surprises later. It’s therefore critical you contact professional flood and mold remediation experts as quickly as possible. They can assess your situation and form an immediate plan.
If you’re dealing with damage to your home thanks to a storm in Denver, CO, please don’t wait for your flood insurance adjuster to show up. Call in storm damage restoration specialists immediately.
The Best Tips for Avoiding Long-Term Flood Damage
9/10/2020 (Permalink)
Flood damage in Denver, CO
It can be difficult to recover from the effects of flooding. Once water seeps into your business in Denver, CO, you are left to deal with water-logged furniture, damaged insulation, ongoing leaks, and many other problems. There are some tips you can use to restore your business to its former condition.
What Flood Water Does to Your Business
Flood damage comes in many forms, and there are more causes of concern than property destruction. For one, flood water is classified as black water and contains a range of contaminants such as sewage and bacteria. Some ways to protect your employees from these contaminants include:
- Using personal protective equipment such as eyewear and gloves
- Safely removing damaged furniture from the property
- Hiring an inspector to search for damage in vents, insulation, and other unseen areas
As a high-risk material, black water should be handled by a professional team. Until an inspection and cleaning can be carried out, you should close off damaged areas of your business from your employees.
How to Recover From a Flood
Professional storm remediation teams can help your business recover from flooding. In addition to having the tools to properly dry and repair impacted areas, a team also has the expertise to determine if the company is salvageable. Furniture or insulation may be so severely damaged by black water that the safest choice is to dispose of them. This will prevent further damage to your business in the form of mold growth.
Reducing the Severity of Damage
While flooding can cause immediate damage to your business, other effects can take a while to manifest. The contaminants in flood water can promote bacterial growth and cause major financial losses down the line. It is important to have your business, even before a flood occurs. In identifying potential weak spots, you can safeguard the property so that the flood damage is much less severe.
